Iron Maiden - Wasted Years
My absolute favorite Heavy Metal band... Iron Maiden.
These guys rock like none other! They have been around since 1975 cranking out their signature heavy, melodic sound. When an Iron Maiden song comes on the radio, there is no mistaking who it is. Although Bruce Dickenson was not the original lead singer, his operatic vocals have become a signature of Iron Maiden… of course there is also the melodic trio of guitar riffs from Adrian Smith, Dave Murray and Janick Gers in every Maiden song that would fit no other band. Almost 35 years later these guys are still cranking out the jams. Selling out shows, making movies, traveling around in their own jumbo jet... flown by Bruce Dickenson himself, (a licensed commercial airline pilot). When you look up the phrase "bad asses" in the dictionary, you should see the picture above. These guys are true bad asses!
Here is a video of one of my favorite Iron Maiden songs (there are many)... Wasted Years.

Slipknot - Psychosocial
Very few songs grab me the way that Slipknot’s Psychosocial does. This song has a very unusual sound for being heavy metal. Mixed with ‘psychosocial!’ being grunted in true death metal style, there are lyrics being sung that sound like they could be from an 80’s glam-rock hair band... not that there is anything wrong with 80’s glam, after all, what else was there to listen to then? But this song is a real stretch for a metal band... and man did they pull it off! The song is nothing less than awesome! The group has come a long way from their humble 1995 beginnings when they were playing under the name “Meld”. This year, Slipknot received a Grammy nomination for ‘Best Metal Performance’ and VMA’s ‘Best Rock Video’ for the song Psychosocial. They have been nominated seven times since 2001, winning in 2006 for the song “Before I Forget”.
These guys are not lightweight rockers by any stretch of the imagination. They are extremely talented musicians... and there are a lot of them... 9 members, wow! Very unusual for a modern metal band.
Something else strange that I noticed about these guys... one of the guitarists is playing a Fender Telecaster. I have NEVER seen a telecaster played in heavy metal... until Slipknot.
Here is Slipknot’s latest video that was nominated for ‘Best Rock Video’... “Psychosocial”

Pantera - Walk
Here is a true legend of Heavy Metal… Pantera, with the gone but never forgotten Dimebag Darrell. They were true Metal Gods!
Dimebag was tragically killed on stage at a concert in Columbus, Ohio in 2004 at the age of 38… he will forever be remembered as one of the greatest Heavy Metal guitarists of all time.
Here is “Walk” from their 1992 album Vulgar Display of Power
